Majorca Guide

If you’re currently planning your summer holiday, we seriously think you should take a close look at what Majorca has to offer. Not only does the island experience amazing weather for most of the year, but you’ll also find a relaxed atmosphere that’s suitable for the entire family. Considering that, this travel guide will tell you everything you need to know about this stunning Spanish location. Take a few minutes to read through all the sections below, and we’re confident Majorca will go straight to the top of your list of possible destinations.

Don’t worry if you’ve never been to Majorca before, as it’s easy to find your bearings. British and American tourists have been arriving here since the 1960s, so the locals are more than used to seeing us around. Also, the vast majority of the people living on this small island speak English as a second language. That means ordering food, making complaints and getting around is taxis is simple.

Firstly, we’re going to talk about some of the areas you might consider staying. While they’re all beautiful, some offer a different experience to others. At the end of the day, where you find a hotel will depend heavily on the people traveling with you.

Palma

Palma is the capital city of Majorca, and it’s where you will land when traveling here by plane. The airport is very large, and it can take more than half an hour to walk to the baggage area. So, anyone with mobility issues should probably ask staff for assistance when they land. The city itself is stunning. There’s plenty of architecture to check out, and top quality restaurants at almost every turn. If you want to avoid the beaches and other tourists, Palma is the place to stay. It’s an ideal location for anyone who wants to experience some true Majorcan culture.

Arta

Couples who are looking for a romantic break should seriously consider the town of Arta on the east of the island. It’s often overlooked by western tourists as it’s not within walking distance of any beaches. However, the buildings here are fantastic, and the streets are lined with boutiques and coffee shops. Those who like to play a round of golf will be happy to learn there are two amazing courses just outside of the town.

Sóller

This small town is only around twenty minutes outside of Palma, and you can read it by train. The journey itself is something to look forward to as the train tracks cut right through the Tramuntana mountains. You’ll pass striking olive groves, pine forests and citrus orchids before reaching your destination. There are even some rather secluded beaches nearby that are perfect for relaxing with your loved one away from the crowds.

Here are some Majorcan tourist attractions you don’t want to overlook…

Artestruz Majorca

Majorca doesn’t have that many animal sanctuaries, but this one in Campos is a brilliant place to take the whole family if you’re looking for something to do on a day out. Here, you’ll find lots of different species, but they focus most of their efforts on ostriches. They might be vicious creatures when you get up close, but they appear very graceful if you watch from a distance.

Playa de Muro Beach

If you’re looking for the most luxurious and clean beach on the island, you won’t go far wrong with a trip down to Playa de Muro. While there will be other tourists around, this area is more popular with couples than families. That means you shouldn’t have to put up with the sound of screaming children as you relax in the sun. Also, the area itself is a great place to visit if you’re after some traditional Mallorcan food. Contrary to popular belief, the bars here don’t play Only Fools and Horses reruns all day long. For that, you’ll need to travel to Magaluf.

Cathedral (Le Seu)

There are many religious historic sights on this island, but none of them compares to the cathedral in Palma. It was built in a gothic style and is unlike anything most people have seen before. There are flower and wildlife gardens within the grounds, and you can even make your way to the top for awe-inspiring views of the local landscape. If you stop nowhere else on your trip for a cultural experience, we advise you to check this place out.

Alcudia Old Town

Much like the town of Arta, Alcudia exhibits ancient buildings and some of the coolest shops on the island. While you probably don’t want to stay here for the duration of your trip, it’s the perfect place to take a day out with your partner. As it’s such a quiet area, many people consider it to be rather romantic. You could spend your morning browsing through the local retail outlets before sitting down to a lovely meal that isn’t going to break the bank.

Caves of Arta

If you feel like you should get out of the sun, perhaps going underground would be a good idea? The caves of Arta are a wonder to behold. Not only are they home to species of animal found nowhere else on the island, but they’re also exceptionally large. Indeed, many people say they’ve never seen such massive caves in their lifetime. You can book tours of the caves for little expense, and your guides will tell you all about how they formed in limestone rock thousands of years ago.

Can Prunera Museum of Modernism

Located in Sóller, this is a small museum that has a large impact on everyone who chooses to visit. Inside, you’ll find some amazing artwork from some of the most impressive artists who’ve ever lived on the island. Also, the interior is to die for. If you take the time to read some reviews online, you’ll see that most people comment on the decor more than anything else. So, if you find yourself in Sóller and you have an hour or so to space, this place is well worth a look.

Now you know a little more about the best locations and attractions on the Spanish island of Majorca, we hope you’ll make the decision to visit this summer. Flights and accommodation are pretty cheap compared to similar destinations, and we promise you won’t regret it.

Have a great time!
